  • 2007

    Since 2007, the PAAJAF Foundation has worked tirelessly on behalf of underprivileged children, youth and women in rural Ghana to end poverty and illiteracy through education and job training programs. These programs were run by Philip Kyei Appiah and Juliet Adusei.

    Speaking about his desire to set up the foundation, Philip, Founder & CEO of PAAJAF, said: “I was inspired to establish the PAAJAF Foundation with Juliet Adusei. She was a teacher and we had the same vision to help neglected children, so it made perfect sense to start off the best way we could. As a young man, I had to work many jobs to support myself from junior high school and upwards. Due to extreme poverty I had to wait four years after completing junior high before I could consider entering senior high and later complete a diploma course. I wanted to study and work, but there were no resources available to progress and I could see others around me struggling too, with no access to school, books and uniforms. This motivated me to help other young, underprivileged people. I want to provide them with an opportunity to be educated and end the cycle of poverty in order to lead a better life.

    PAAJAF offered three programs in Ghana: Educating Adults, Sponsor a Child and an After School Program. We ran in Gbawe, Accra, and in Benkasa, Brong Ahalfo. The programs commenced with 5 adults in the educational program, 10 and 60 students for the afterschool program in Gbawe, and Benkasa respectively.

  • 2008

    In late 2008, the Benkasa programs closed as co-founder Juliet, who was posted to the Benkasa community, was transferred. There was no one there to coordinate the activities in the area and PAAJAF did not have funds to hire someone to oversee the activities.

    The activities at Gbawe continued and grew with 25 adults in the education program and 30 after school students.

    We began an outreach project where we distributed posters and materials on health issues to 500 people in the community at Gbawe.

  • 2012

    PAAJAF reconvened the After School, Sponsor a Child and Gbawe Entrepreneurs Network programs, but the Educating Adults program was put on hold due to lack of funding to pay teachers.

    In 2012, the GEN project was introduced. GEN is a micro-credit project by the PAAJAF Foundation.

    By the end of 2012, the After School program had 36 students, the Sponsor a Child program had 6 children and the Gbawe Entrepreneurs Network (GEN) had 7 beneficiaries.

  • 2013

    PAAJAF resumed the Educating Adults program and renamed it and the After School program, PFLC (PAAJAF Family Learning Centre). We partnered with Pulsar International, a fundraising organization in UK, which was waiting for its charity status. Towards the end of 2013, PAAJAF was able to secure two small grants for the PFLC program from Tula Trust and Sourter Foundation in UK. A venue (one room) was secured and the After School and Educating Adults programs took place there.

    In 2013, PAAJAF’s Sponsor a Child program continued to support the same 6 children as in 2012, and by the first quarter of the 2013 the GEN project had a total of 15 beneficiaries.

    For the GEN project, PAAJAF Foundation established a relationship with Sinapi Aba Trust (Kasoa branch) which granted loans to network members, of which PAAJAF facilitated the loans. The project was put on hold due to the lack of funds to support the administration.

  • 2014

    The PFLC program continued operating the Educating Adults and After School program, and the grant received from the Tula Trust and Sourter Foundation for the GEN project ended in November 2014.

    The Educating Adults program had 20 participants and the After School program had 60 children at the center, for which the tenancy agreement of the venue rented expired. We thus had to move as there were no funds to continue running the programs.

    PAAJAF received assistance from Linino Organisation which allowed us to hire a venue, an apartment with 5 rooms, for our new IT program. PAAJAF waited for computers and accessories to commence the program. Unfortunately, the required items for the computer lab were not secured. The apartment was rented for 2 years and the lease expired in November 2016.

    The Sponsor a Child program grew and doubled compared to previous years as the GlobalGiving grants through individual donations increased thanks to the efforts of our fundraising and outreach volunteers. To mention a few, the efforts of our volunteers: Ibis Vera, EAAP Director for America, and her team; Kristine Germar and Mainak Senguptu, Direct Fundraising Managers; Aruna Rao, Volunteer Communications and Public Relations Director; and Ana, Supriyaa, Hillary, our noble donor volunteers.

    Thanks to all of our donors, especially Anna D’Hulster who sponsored 3 of the 12 children at PAAJAF for the 2014/2015 academic year.

  • 2015

    PAAJAF renamed the PFLC to PEI (PAAJAF Educational Institute) as the name PFLC was not known to the community. PAAJAF introduced a Pre-School program providing scholarships for the community. The main goal of PEI is to come up with a scholarship University in Ghana in the future. PEI currently has 22 students, with students ranging from 1- 6 years of age.

    In 2015, the Educating Adults program had 6 students from the 20 in 2014. Due to lack of funds to pay facilitators and procure educational materials, we decided to charge a fee of USD 30 for every 3 three months of accessing the program, which reduced the number of students. Of the 6 students, only 2 were able to pay part of the fees. We received many inquiries for the Family Education program but the fees deterred people from joining.

    The Sponsor a Child program supported 12 children and PAAJAF has more on the waiting list.

    With regards to the IT program, as we had not secured resources for the computer lab, we utilized three of the rented rooms for Pre-School, one room for an office and the remaining allocated for the IT program, should we get the requirements fulfilled.

    Apart from this, our requirements moving forward are:

    1. Funding to continue renting the apartment once it expires
    2. Funds to purchase our own land to build and avoid moving from place to place and renting
    3. Hiring of teachers for PEI
    4. Venue for the IT project since the pre-school cannot be moved
    5. School bus

    Prior to December 2014, PAAJAF Foundation operated from home and from the church office where Philip works as the church’s accounts clerk.

  • 2016

    The year 2016 registered an additional 60 students at PEI, which is the heart of our organization at the moment. Now PAAJAF is offering scholarship school education to 120 students at PEI through our education program.

    We maintained 6 sponsored children in the community who are not students at PEI but need help with education. We have 35 e-readers to start a library project and are looking for other resources needed for the project so that it can be fully implemented.
