Still to this day, access to education is not a granted universal right as it was supposed to be. In Gbawe, children still face multiple adversities in their path towards attending school and being able to learn, while receiving formal education. It is important that schools can identify these children and can create mechanisms that can prevent them from dropping out of school and miss the opportunity of a better future. PAAJAF is committed to provide children of Gbawe with an open door that can welcome children from all backgrounds, gender and learning constraints, so that education can reach each one of them.
In Gbawe, apart from the lack of public schools, there are several other aspects that undermine the universal right to education to these children in Ghana. Coming from a poverty backgrounds normally tends to make it more difficult for children to reach school, as families do not perceive school as important as obtaining more income to the household. The rate of drop-out in these cases is normally higher. In terms of gender, although there is a fair equity in terms of school attendance between boys and girls in Ghana, girls’ education should not be overlooked as an important element for inclusiveness, since in case of any family issues, girls are more likely to drop out of school to help with family care and house work. The distance to school and poor school conditions can also prevent children from attending.
In order to tackle these constraints, PAAJAF understands that the school must have not only adequate conditions to its students, so that they have a safe place to learn, as well as it must provide high-quality education in terms of curriculum that can promote inclusiveness.
PAAJAF priorities will be therefore to provide an education with quality, with adequate infrastructures in terms of learning materials, spaces for playing, healthy meals and good sanitation facilities. On the other hand, it is also important that school teachers have the competencies to respond to learner diversity by adopting inclusive pedagogy for numeracy and literacy, respecting the fact that each student has its own learning pace.
By creating a healthy, comfortable and safe environment at school, children will be more likely to attend and to be prevented from dropping out. While at school, children will feel welcomed in their own learning process and be more prone to further develop their competencies and acquire new skills at their own pace, without being marginalized by their background, gender or learning ability.
