Promoting Education Through Sports

On behalf of PAAJAF’s commitment to provide high quality education to children in Gbawe, by implementing an holistic approach, sports rise as a critical area within a child’s development, that can foster not only learning improvement as well as the acquisition of important life-skills. This project intends to integrate sports into their school curriculum as means for a better education and personal development.

Given the constraints faced by children in Ghana regarding the universal right to education, namely lack of public schools, inadequate school conditions and basic curriculum, it is important to go that extra-mile and try to engage them in a more diversified array of activities. Sports is not only an essential part of any child development due to health reasons and overall physical well-being as well as it plays an important role in building up soft skills. The participation in sports can also serve as an hobby to avoid children to drifting astray into dangerous life choices such as school drop-out, crime and violence, that can undermine their chance for a different and more prosperous life path.

In order to tackle these constraints, PAAJAF understands that the school must have not only adequate conditions to its students, so that they have a safe place to learn, as well as it must provide high-quality education in terms of curriculum that can promote inclusiveness.

PAAJAF priorities will be therefore to provide an education with quality, with adequate infrastructures in terms of learning materials, spaces for playing, healthy meals and good sanitation facilities. On the other hand, it is also important that school teachers have the competencies to respond to learner diversity by adopting inclusive pedagogy for numeracy and literacy, respecting the fact that each student has its own learning pace.

Long-term Impact

By creating a healthy, comfortable and safe environment at school, children will be more likely to attend and to be prevented from dropping out. While at school, children will feel welcomed in their own learning process and be more prone to further develop their competencies and acquire new skills at their own pace, without being marginalized by their background, gender or learning ability.
