Public Health Education to Children in Ghana

PAAJAF Foundation has been working towards socio-economic development in Gbawe area, by providing education to children between 4 and 12 years old. Apart from formal education, one of the critical areas that needs our attention is public health. This necessity comes from the desire to instruct the children to have a correct hygiene and health habits, that can hopefully turn them into informed citizens, improving their health and of those in their community.

According to UN MDG (?) 2015 report, 78% of population in Ghana has access to safe drinking water. Nevertheless, the water infrastructure is still insufficient as there is very limited sanitation, which translates into intermittent supply and low-quality water, increasing the chance of inappropriate hygiene behavior and fueling the spread of infectious diseases, causing children and their families to be more prone to developing health issues.

In order to tackle and mitigate the lack of education and consciousness around this problem, PAAJAF Foundation would be designing and implementing public health education to the children at its school. Students would be given the chance to learn about hygiene and how to protect themselves and their families from infections, by encouraging the development of healthy behaviors for life.

The Sustainable Development Goals, a set of goals to guide global development to 2030 developed by the United Nations and that guides PAAJAF, include a specific goal to “ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. In the pursuit of this goal and fulfilling the rights of children, PAAJAF works to reach the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Ghana.

Long-term Impact

By exposing children to water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH), PAAJAF Foundation will be providing a basis for healthier children, that can perform better at school and hopefully influence good hygiene practices in their homes, among family members and the local community, leading up to an overall improvement of public health.
